Local eighth-grader honored with award

The Daily Herald

Jacob Hillman, 14, an eighth-grader at Lakeridge Junior High School, was recently named a State Honoree in the 2005 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program.

Jacob visits and performs a variety of household chores for local senior citizens.

"I have grown up seeing my dad help people all the time," Jacob said. "He told me that service can bring you some of the greatest joys in life."

After meeting an elderly neighbor named Millie, Jacob learned that she was a widow and was very lonely, so he began visiting her and helping her with a variety of small house and garden chores.

He typically would spend several hours a week mowing her lawn, feeding her cats, taking out garbage, shoveling snow and doing other tasks, in addition to keeping her company.

After a while, others in Jacob's family and neighborhood began helping Millie, too, and Jacob expanded his activities to include other senior citizens.

In several instances, he got his Boy Scout troop involved, raking leaves, cleaning up yards and providing Christmas fruit baskets for the elderly.

"There are so many elderly people that are lonely," Jacob said. "These people have so much to offer us younger people if we will take the time to listen."

Honorees will receive a $1,000 award, an engraved silver medallion, and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., in May for four days of recognition events.

ALPINE

In only her second season in the sport, Chloe Dauwalder, a ninth-grader at Timberline Middle School, captured gold medals in the Utah Winter Games women's divisions of the Slopestyle and Aerials events Jan. 30 at the Utah Olympic Park in Park City. The 14-year-old gymnast turned ski jumper dreams of competing in the Olympics but will be two years too young to compete in the 2006 Olympics in Torino, Italy. So she instead has set her sights on going to Vancouver, B.C., Canada, for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

AMERICAN FORK

Scott Duncan of the Utah Highway Patrol will discuss traffic issues at the Elder Quest noon meal Wednesday at the Northampton House, 198 W. 300 North, American Fork, starting at 12:30 p.m. Cost is $13 at the door. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 362-2817.

CEDAR FORT

The Town Council unanimously approved spending the $900 they budgeted for re-certification of the town's Water Master, Calvin Cook. Cook will attend the annual rural water conference in March and keep his credentials for operating the town's water system.

CEDAR HILLS

The City Council has a full agenda for it meeting today at 7 p.m. at the City Office at 3925 W. Cedar Hills Drive. Topics the council plans to discuss include: ordinances regarding alcohol sales, business hours of operation and engine brakes, a request for funding from the North Utah County Community Choir and a substance abuse presentation from Utah County.

EAGLE MOUNTAIN

Eagle Mountain City is the first city in the county to have the RADKids program in all of its schools, council members announced. The RADKids programs has been spearheaded by Sgt. Jo Murphy and teaches kids the importance of making good decisions, safety, the dangers of drugs and other issues. Council members commended Murphy for her work with the program and its effect on the children of the city.

HIGHLAND

City Administrator Barry Edwards told the City Council the Highland City Water Advisory Board had recommended no more well water be accepted as part of the water requirement to develop in Highland. "We are at capacity for pumping water. We cannot use any more well water," he said. "We just want developers to know not to go looking for well water because the City Council will not be accepting it." Councilwoman Kathryn Schramm asked "What if someone has a well with flowing water?" "The ordinance allows the council to make that decision," said Edwards. The policy change passed with Schramm's opposing vote.

LEHI

The city and the Library Board have set March 10 as the date the 2005 Lehi City Library Gala. Featuring the bluegrass band Gift Horse for entertainment, the dinner and show will be hosted in the Lehi Legacy Center, 123 N. Center Street, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person and can be purchased at the library, 120 N. Center St., or at the Legacy Center. All proceeds from the event go to the Frances Comer perpetual library fund.

LINDON

The City Council approved adding $7,031.75 to H. E. Davis Construction's contract to renovate the Squaw Hollow debris basin at 500 North and 800 East. The city wants extra compacting in two areas so the soil will be more stable for a "possible driveway on the north and possible building construction on the east."

MAPLETON

After a public hearing about rezoning property owned by Don Henrichsen, the Mapleton City Council on Feb. 2 decided to continue the matter for two weeks waiting to see if Henrichsen might proceed on what he had planned to do with the property. The property under consideration is located at approximately 100 South and 2400 East and is approximately 68 acres. The deal with the city was for Henrichsen to deed the land to Mapleton city in exchange for 80 transferable development right certificates worth in the neighborhood of $1.6 million.

OREM

The City Council filled six vacancies in its Oct. 8 meeting in the Senior Citizen Advisory Commission with three couples, appointing Parley and Kathleen Anderson, Emerson and Pearl Hartzell, and Wendle and Rexine Eager. The council also issued a reappointment to Russell Brown to continue his service to the Metropolitan Water District. The council also agreed to have local architect Richard Gardner fill the vacancy in the Board of Building and Fire Code Appeals.

PAYSON

Whitney Penrod will represent Payson Jr. High School at the State PTA Reflections Contest in April. The theme this year in Reflections was, "A Different Kind of Hero." Whitney said, "When you think of a hero, you usually think of Superman or someone like that. But when I heard 'A Different Kind of Hero,' I immediately thought of my mom because she saves my life in a different way. Moms do so much, and I don't think we stop to appreciate them enough, so I wrote my story about a girl my age who finds out who her real hero is -- her mom." Whitney won first place at PJHS, at the District level and the Regional level.

PLEASANT GROVE

The Pleasant Grove Orchestra will offer a free concert to the public Friday at 7 p.m. in the Pleasant Grove High School Auditorium. This concert is family oriented and will feature familiar melodies "From Classic to Cartoons." The community orchestra is an organization that offers musicians from the area an opportunity to use their talents in providing concerts for the public. Anyone interested in participating in the orchestra should contact Sharon Ives at 785-0479, Lisa Banks at 796-1642 or Jenny Alton at 796-7993.

The annual Passover Seder services at Brigham Young University will be held March 26 and April 1, 8, 9, 15, and 23 from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. in 3228 Wilkinson Student Center. Tickets will go on sale Tuesday, in 271 Joseph Smith Building at $25 for the public and $17 for current BYU students, faculty and staff. Call the Passover hot line at 422-8325 or Patty Smith at 422-3611 for more information. The Passover, a Jewish celebration commemorating the deliverance of Israel from Egypt, has been celebrated for millennia. Victor L. In addition to the services, a Passover Seder service workshop is being offered by Ludlow on Saturday, at 10 a.m. in 3228 WSC.
