WINDHAM, N.H. -- An 11-year-old girl walking near local schools escaped an attempted abduction yesterday afternoon, police said.

The girl had just reached Lowell Road and was walking between the Windham Middle School and Golden Brook Elementary School when a man in a pickup
truck stopped and opened the driver's side door demanding she get in about 2:20 p.m., police said.

She ran away from the man to the elementary school, police said. The girl recently graduated the Police Department's RAD KIDS Personal Safety and Empowerment Program that was sponsored by the Windham School District's Summer Camp Program.

The girl said he drove a late-model full-sized pickup truck that is dark blue or purple and had Massachusetts license plates. She didn't remember any of the numbers on the tags, but said the two-door truck has body molding running diagonally from the cab to the bed of the truck.

The man was white, 30-40 years old with medium-length brown hair, a mustache that stopped at the corners of his mouth and reportedly had a deep voice. The girl said he had “rotten teeth,” police said.

“We believe it's a legitimate response,” said Sgt. Glenn Record. “We'll have extra patrols in the area the next few days.”

Anyone with information is urged to telephone the Police Department at (603) 434-5577.
