Student Safety
(WSBT) Some Michigan students aren't just learning the "Three R's" as they go back to school; they're also learning some "D".Michigan State Police and Niles police officers are testing a child self-defense program called radKIDS all this week. Children ages 5 to 12 learn how to scream at potential attackers, run for help, and gouge predators in the eyes.
Officers say kids remember how to fight off attackers from a hands-on approach better than from traditional child safety programs.
"I going to get in my radKIDS stance and if they come closer," said 7-year-old Brenna, who attended the class Monday. "If they come closer to me I'm going to say stay back really loud."
Nationally, the radKIDS program has cited 23 cases where kids who've been trained in the program have gotten away from child predators.
