Sunburn and Dehydration!

You'd have to be living under a rock to be unaware of the increased exposure we have to the sun's dangerous UV rays, and the long-lasting damaging effects the sun can have. Generally speaking we are very careful about making sure the children are lathered up with sunscreen as soon as we hit the beaches, but what about day trips?

As you send your kids off to the beach with friends or to summer camp, be sure to pack sunscreen. Start training them be mindful to apply (and reapply) their sunscreen throughout the day. A good rule of thumb for reapplying sunscreen is every 2 hours or after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating and immediately after towel drying. As the day gets hotter, they should add sunglasses, a hat, a cover up or find an umbrella to sit under to avoid direct exposure to the sun.

Lastly a gentle reminder that it is also not unreasonable to make a special requests of any counselors or supervisors at camp to ensure your child stays coated in SPF throughout the day. Have them be accountable. If they have to do it for your child, they might just do it for them all.

Dehydration

Between 50 and 75 percent of boys and girls attending summer sports camps are significantly dehydrated, according to recent studies. The studies found that 25 to 30 percent of the campers showed signs of serious dehydration, putting them at increased risk of heat-related illnesses.
 
Generally speaking we're are pretty good at hydrating after physical activity has occurred but to keep kids from becoming dehydrated, your child must drink fluids before, during and after exercise. Drinking 4-8 oz. of fluids prior to exercise will reduce or delay the effects of dehydration. During sports children should be drinking 5-9 oz. of water or a sports drink every 20 minutes as well as anytime a child feels thirsty (not just during scheduled breaks per-determined by camp counselors). The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends 5 oz. of cold tap water or a sport drink for a child weighing 88 pounds.

One ounce is about two kid-size gulps. (and don't forget the camera)...
